Traditional African black soap known as Alata Samina is one of the oldest cleansing formulations in the world. It originates in West Africa where women have been making it by hand from plant ash and natural oils for over five centuries. It is not a brand. It is not a product category. It is a living tradition that is passed from woman to woman across generations that has never needed improvement because it has always worked.
Where this one comes from:
This soap was made by women’s cooperatives in the shea belt communities where the shea tree grows wild and every part of the production process has remained unchanged for generations. The women who made it learned from their mothers. Their mothers learned from their grandmothers. The knowledge is older than any written record of it.
What is in it:
Plant ash. Unrefined shea butter. Water. Nothing else.
The ash — burned from shea tree bark, shea husks, or other locally available plant material — provides natural potassium hydroxide, the lye that reacts with the shea butter to create soap. This reaction is called saponification. It is the same chemistry that makes all soap. But here every ingredient is natural, every step is done by hand, and nothing synthetic enters the process at any point.
What it looks like:
Brown. The name refers to the dark ash used in its making , not the colour of the finished bar. Real African black soap ranges from warm medium brown to deep dark brown depending on the ash source and the oil base used. If it is jet black it has been dyed. If it is perfectly smooth it has been moulded in a factory. If it is uniformly identical between bars it was not made by hand.
This soap is brown and crumbly and variable between batches. That is not a flaw. That is authenticity.
What it does:
Cleanses deeply without stripping the skin’s natural oils. The natural lye provides thorough cleansing action while the partially unsaponified shea butter — the shea butter that remains active in the finished bar — conditions the skin simultaneously. Most cleansers do one or the other. This does both.
Addresses the skin concerns that affect melanin-rich skin most — acne, hyperpigmentation, post-inflammatory dark spots, excess oil production, and chronic skin inflammation. Not because it was formulated for these concerns in a laboratory. Because the women who made it had these concerns and refined the recipe over generations until it addressed every one of them.
Suitable for all skin types. Particularly effective for oily, acne-prone, and sensitive skin. Safe for use on the face and body. Gentle enough for daily use when used correctly.
How to use it:
Never apply the bar directly to the face. Lather it in your hands or on a cloth first then apply the lather gently. Rinse thoroughly. Follow immediately with a moisturiser — unrefined shea butter is the perfect companion. Start with two to three uses per week and increase as your skin adjusts. Store on a draining soap dish away from standing water.
What it will not do:
It will not lather dramatically. It will not smell of synthetic fragrance. It will not look the same from one bar to the next. It will not behave like the commercial soap your bathroom has always known.
It will clean your skin more thoroughly, more gently, and more honestly than almost anything you have used before.
Because it was made for skin. Not for a shelf.
